Our Trust of Schools

Sciences

The SWTT course enables passionate scientists to engender in their students a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for Science. Trainees discover the different ways in which students learn and how to make this an enjoyable and relevant experience for them. SWTT has a long tradition of training successful Science teachers; many of our former trainees now lead Science departments across the South West.

We actively encourage applicants from a range of Science backgrounds to ensure our schools have a large spread of experience to enrich students' learning experiences. Specialising in either Physics, Biology or Chemistry our Science SWTT students will undertake a bespoke programme to enable the teaching of their chosen specialism to KS5 (A level).  Throughout the course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to offer Combined and Separate Science GCSEs for all exam boards.  The combination of theoretical knowledge, taught using concrete examples and effective explanations and practical skills makes science one of the most exciting and enriching subjects offered in Secondary Schools. You will have ample opportunity to contribute to both aspects of science education plus a wealth of additional experiences through STEM clubs and careers links.

Physics with Maths:

Our schools are keen to ensure children benefit from the skills and expertise of their teachers. To maximise the potential of applicants with a background in Physics, we are offering the opportunity to train to teach Physics with either Science or with Maths. Choosing the Physics with Maths route will enable applicants to learn to teach both subjects. Candidates will benefit from a teaching practice that allows them to specialise in Physics but also teach some Maths, finding the connections between the subjects and finding ways to make these explicit for young people. Candidates who qualify as Physics with Maths teachers would be able to apply for positions teaching either subject.

Engineers Teach Physics:

Many applicants to our school-centred ITT route bring a wide range of experience and skills. Former engineers bring a wealth of subject knowledge to their teaching of Physics and Maths. Applicants to either our Physics with Science or Physics with Maths routes would be welcome to apply via our ‘Engineers Teach Physics’ code which would open up a range of benefits including:

  • access to national learning communities of other engineers training to teach Physics
  • bespoke subject knowledge training to ensure you are ready to teach both subjects
  • support in applying for Physics posts in our partnership.
