Our Trust of Schools

Music

Music at South West Teacher Training is firmly based in the practices of our Partner Schools who have a tradition of valuing the place of the Arts within the curriculum. Trainees will be placed in schools where Music is taught as a valued subject and forms an integral part of children’s academic and extra-curricular life, adding range and breadth to the curriculum.

The South West Teacher Training Music route offers:
• Close working with subject mentors who are leading practitioners of Music in their own contexts
• Insight into the role of Music as a part of the curriculum in a variety of Primary and Secondary settings
• Coverage of elements of Music as a subject including the variety of qualifications awarded in Secondary Schools; GCSE, A Level and vocational approaches
• A course integrating academic study with practical methods in the classroom enabling practitioners to develop their own approach to Music education. The emphasis is upon working in schools so that trainees can develop a creative, reflective approach.

On our full time, one year PGCE programme you will bring your graduate expertise, skills and enthusiasm for teaching music to children of all abilities from ages 11–18.

With 32 weeks placement experience, you’ll be able to sharpen your skills and fully prepare yourself for your future teaching career.

Trainees based in the Plymouth area can access much of the centre-based training at our Plymouth Campus Schools (Lipson Co-operative Academy and All Saints Academy) and those in or near Exeter will attend training at West Exe School and Matford Brook Academy.
