The School Centred Initial Teacher Training PGCE programme in Design & Technology prepares students to teach in Secondary Schools. All students follow a core syllabus focusing on the generic skills, knowledge and concepts related to designing and making. They will also develop further their own specialist knowledge within their areas of expertise, in order to become able and confident teachers at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and beyond. The areas of expertise follow the Design and Technology Association's (DATA) model of a Design & Technology teacher. These are Resistant Materials Technology, Systems & Control, Food Technology and Textiles Technology. Students have the opportunity to follow two of these areas alongside the Core Skills requirement. Students will have opportunities to use and evaluate a wide range of subject specific resources and materials, including Information Technology. Information gathered will be used to produce a range of teaching resources. Students have the opportunity to use a sophisticated range of CAD/CAM software and manufacturing equipment. The PGCE programme aims to produce reflective teachers who are able to evaluate and further develop their own subject and teaching skills.
